Greetings, my dear Purrfumery friends!

Fall is nearly here, and I’m feeling the glorious lull of this season of transition. I’ve been picking bouquets and taking care of myself, my family and my animals. I’ve also been thinking about the next chapter of my life and my business. 

I consider Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery to be a love business. It’s also a fun flower medicine business! I love making perfumes that lift your mood and your spirit and make you feel yummy. I love to use the best and most incredible botanical materials to make my scented bon bons. I love the history of perfumery and I love being in the rhythm of the seasons. And I love raising awareness about animal rights and conservation through my work. 

My work is a refuge in the face of fear, racism and apathy. I don’t do anything I don’t love with my Purrfumery, and I feel like that’s something to celebrate! So… let’s party!

What's The Deal, Laurie?

What’s inspiring this heady swirl of emotion? Well, it’s complicated, but also very simple. I’ve been staying off social media for a while – sometimes I just want to be in my own world. I always admire my animals – my kitties and pigeons – and I’ve been thinking about them a lot more in my free time. They delight and inspire me.

Silly Kitties

Our kitties are great. Truffle is up to his usual shenanigans. Did you know that Truffle is a rescued feral? My friend Lisa rescued him from a parking lot and when I met him, I fell in love. The trouble with Truffle was he used to scare little Buttercup, who was blind. Truffle would ambush her. I put a bell on him to help warn Buttercup when he was coming around, but that gave Buttercup PTSD – every time she would hear the bell, she would cry. Then Lisa told me she had another feral that she feeds that was very social and needing a home. We brought him home and named him Kitty Magic because he solved all the kitty problems! Truffle had someone to play with and he left Buttercup alone. Our sweet Buttercup went to kitty heaven a few years later – we miss her all the time. 

Lovely Pigeons

Our pigeons changed my life. My credo is… if an animal in need comes into my karma, I am going to help it. That’s why we had bees for 18 years and why I care so much about raising awareness about animal musks in perfumery. So, when Polka Dot walked through my cat door with a broken wing, I embraced him with open arms and rehabilitated him. I knew that he would always be my love of the birdy world! 

We built an aviary so we could have a home for more pigeons. Polka Dot welcomed his new wife, Paloma to the aviary. King Louis recently died – rest in peace, sweetie. He was Pearl’s husband. We just brought home a new partner for Pearl – his name is Horatio. They are enjoying their life together, and they’re a great love match! 

Our pigeons delight us and make us laugh. They’re little lovers who mate for life, and they are so silly and funny. Pigeons are some of the most maligned animals in the natural world, but they are here because of US! People domesticate and race pigeons, and the large percentage who never make it home are very vulnerable. Pigeons raised in captivity never learn to forage, so when they can’t find their way home, they will either starve or become prey. There are so many beautiful pigeons who need homes. So, you see, hanging out with my animals has a profound impact on my life. They also inspire my business, and I share it all with you, my dear Purrfumery friends!
