Perfumer Laurie Stern
Laurie Stern, the natural perfumer and artist behind Velvet and Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery, has been practicing the art of transforming the everyday into the magical throughout her life, from designing her house full of kitties and flowers nestled in a perfumer’s garden in the hills, to her extraordinary experience working with lace, flowers, and weddings. Laurie uses her gift for capturing the essence of things and making them change and grow in ways that are beautiful and fun. She now merges all her talents and interests in her true calling as an alchemist of scent.

Natural vs. Synthetic Ingredients
Beyond the simple fact that natural ingredients produce a more subtle, complex perfume than synthetics can achieve, there are some very serious health considerations that accompany the use of synthetic perfume ingredients.  Not only does using solely natural components provide you, the wearer, with the most luxurious experience possible – wearing a delicious alchemy of the earth’s own gifts – but it is vitally important for everyone’s health and the health of our planet.

Animal Musks:
The Dark Side of Perfume
Even many natural perfumers use animal musks in making their perfumes. Laurie, who is strongly opposed to the use of animal musks in perfume, feels it is important that people know the real story behind the ingredients in the perfumes they wear so that each person has the opportunity to make a truly informed decision.

In a corner of the Perfumery, and elegant French country secretary occupies a place of honor. This is where Laurie houses the materials she uses to create her extraordinary perfumes. Tahitian vanilla beans infuse their delicious aroma into an antique apothecary bottle full of biodynamic grape alcohol, while rows of house-tinctured flower essences like gardenia and blue passion flower wait to make their special contribution to one of Laurie's newest alchemical creations. This is Laurie's "perfume organ," a way to keep her hundreds of scents at hand as she experiments and develops new perfumes. Traditionally, the perfume organ is organized alphabetically by the name of each material but, just as Laurie's perfume-making techniques often go beyond the traditional, her organ is organized along slightly different lines. "I've organized my organ to fit the way I think as I'm making perfume," she says. "Instead of alphabetically, I organize my materials categorically. As I begin to build a perfume, I may find myself reaching for something "spicy," so I'll reach into the "Berries, Seeds, and Spices" category and end up with perhaps ginger, cardamom, or nutmeg. To ground a blend I'll look for something in my "Balsams and resins" section, where I might decide on frankincense, myrrh, or labdanum. My "Antique Oils" section is one I especially love to incorporate into my perfumes for accessory notes—cinnamon, sandalwood, and rose to name a few, have an incomparable richness and beauty that only come with having aged over a century."
